The Division of Human Resources strongly encourages departments to conduct criminal background checks on all prospective employees, particularly for those persons being hired into positions dealing with students or handling University assets.

A statewide criminal background check can be requested by completing the SLED Criminal Background Check form. The cost to conduct the search through the State Law Enforcement Division is $25 per person. Please note that criminal background checks through SLED are only for job candidates who DO NOT handle money.

For background checks and credit reports required under University policy HR 1.90 Job Reference and Background Checks, please use the Acknowledgment and Authorization for Background Check form. This is also the form to be used if requesting a criminal background check on a candidate who has lived outside of South Carolina within the past seven years. The cost will vary based on the type of items to be checked.
