Assertiveness at Work

Assertiveness means being able to express your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in an open, honest, and confident way. Being assertive is often difficult because it calls for skills that we were not taught at home or in school. Sometimes, people are either passive or aggressive. Neither temperament will foster the mutual respect and "win-win" solutions that are needed in the workplace. The skills you learn in this workshop can help you learn to "speak up" with more confidence. This workshop offers instruction and small group activities designed to help you learn to:

  • use communication techniques that will help you express yourself more positively, productively, and with greater effectiveness
  • make requests and state complaints constructively
  • apply new strategies that will empower you to resist even subtle coercion
  • contribute your ideas and concerns with greater freedom and diplomacy
  • improve relationships by asking for what you need and by setting healthy boundaries.
