Frequently
Asked Questions
Who is eligible to participate in professional development classes?
Professional development classes are available to faculty and staff,
regardless of experience or educational background. Other members
of the Carolina community are welcomed on a space-available basis.
Employees are eligible for professional development programs without
regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability,
or veteran status.
What if I have to work when a class is offered?
Many workshops are offered during work hours, and managers are
encouraged to allow employees to participate. Employees who attend
professional development programs during work hours are normally
not required to make up time spent in class.
How can I find out about upcoming workshops?
Professional development workshops are listed on the Professional
Development Calendar and USC's Calendar
of Events. Both University-sponsored professional development
and professional development offered by the South Carolina Office
of Human Resources Development Services are announced in USC
Times.
The Professional Development Office offers a training listserv
that provides information each month about upcoming workshops, including
new and make-up sessions. To subscribe to the listserv, send an
e-mail to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SC.EDU
and include in the body of the message (substituting your first
and last name):
SUB TRAINING firstname lastname
How do I register for a workshop?
Employees may register online
or by completing and printing an Adobe PDF Registration
Form. Please mail or fax the registration form to the Professional
Development Office in Columbia or to the Human Resource Office
on your campus. Registration is accepted on a first-come basis.
How do I pay for workshops that have a fee?
When you fill out the registration form for a fee-based workshop,
please list a valid departmental account and fund number. Participant
fees are charged to departments on a monthly basis. Please note
that supervisory approval must be obtained before registering for
a fee-based workshop.
What about parking?
For workshops at 1600 Hampton Street,
campus parking is available with any faculty/staff decal in the lower lot behind the 1600 Hampton Street
Annex. The entrance to the parking lot is between the 1600 Hampton
Street tower and the WACH-57 building on Pickens Street. For workshops
at University Technology
Services, parking is available in the metered lot behind the
building. If special accommodations are needed for employees with
disabilities, please contact Professional
Development prior to the date of a program.
Do I receive credit for these classes?
Employees who attend all workshops in a series receive professional
development certificates for these programs. Records are maintained
on participants in all programs sponsored by the Division of Human
Resources. Employees may apply for Continuing Education Units (CEU)
through the Professional Development Office in the Division of Human
Resources.
