Floater Services, a program to provide temporary secretarial/clerical assistance to academic and administrative units.

Floater Services on the Columbia Campus

The Division of Human Resources maintains a pool of employees, commonly referred to as floaters, with secretarial and clerical skills whom we may assign to departments in times of unusual and temporary need. These needs include vacancies, annual leave, sick leave, maternity leave, or heavy workload periods.

Procedures for Scheduling
To schedule a floater, departments complete a Floater Request form. You can download it here, if you have Adobe's Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you can download it from Adobe's website for no charge. Or call the Professional Development Office, 777-6578, to obtain the form.

Charges for floater services are $95 for a full day and $47.50 for a half day. Full-day hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., while half-day hours are 8:30 a.m. to noon or 1-5 p.m. IIT's are submitted monthly to departments to cover charges for floater services.

Send the completed floater request form, with the department head's signature, to Professional Development, Suite 101, 1600 Hampton Street. Departments also can fax completed forms to 777-8210.

Once your floater request form is received, a staff member from the Professional Development Office will contact the department to confirm the availability of a floater.

If your department has an immediate need, you can call Professional Development at 777-6578 and accommodations will be made if a floater is available.

Floater Qualifications
Floaters have above average typing skills and are experienced in WordPerfect or Microsoft Word.

Many of our floaters have experience in preparing USC paperwork such as purchasing, travel, and extra compensation.

Some of our floaters have spreadsheet experience.
